Design of offshore wind turbine towers

Abstract

Offshore wind turbines (OWTs) have started dotting the waters in northern Europe and Asia, and new projects are scheduled to come online in the upcoming years along the U.S. coast lines. A set of new challenges is facing the designers of OWT support structures and towers, and no unified road-map exists for optimal design. This chapter offers a review of the key aspects involved in the reliable design of new structures. The text may be helpful to young engineers entering the field of offshore wind power, as well as serve as a concise reference for seasoned designers.
