Abstract

The cleaning of oiled shorelines frequently is the most time-consuming and costly component of spill response operations. Decisions regarding the treatment techniques that are most appropriate and the level of effort of the response activities are based on understanding the effects of the oil and the consequences of the cleanup activities themselves. Systematic assessment surveys, sometimes referred to as the shoreline cleanup assessment technique (SCAT), provide this information.
