Each department in your organization plays a specific role.
By aligning the work each department does and collaborating cross‐functionally, these departments can help move the needle on the business's most important goals. But more often than not, they end up working in silos, which leads to chaos and hinders the success of the organization.
Without alignment and clarity, teams are unable to productively contribute to the business's topline goals, and wind up creating their own definitions of success, which can be wildly different from one another. We've established the role that OKRs play in solving this process. OKRs bring alignment across the organization, and, when applied with the loose approach discussed throughout this book, the differences between these departments becomes less of a challenge to overcome and more of a strength to harness.
In this chapter, you'll learn some of these department‐specific nuances, and the benefits OKRs bring to their specific functions, but I'll also detail some of the challenges these departments and leaders within them can expect to face as they participate in their organization's OKR practice.
If you're a departmental leader, my hope for you is that by the end of this section, you'll be better equipped to address the specific needs of your role and your team as you embark on the next phase of your OKR journey.
