Have you ever made the decision to “wing it?” Maybe you showed up for a job interview without first studying the company (unfortunately, it turned out that seeing one of their commercials on TV didn’t qualify as research), or you decided to head to the seventh game of the World Series in full team regalia, swinging the hometown pennant but absent a ticket. I’m a planner by nature but have been known to wing it from time to time, almost always with predictably bad results. (See the “Adventures in unpreparedness” sidebar for the painful details.)
Rigorous preparation is a prerequisite for success in the OKRs arena, where, despite the framework’s inherent simplicity, rewards are never guaranteed. Without a doubt, the best ways to prepare your teams for OKRs glory are to provide training on the fundamentals of the model and to determine the OKRs “philosophy” that you’ll use to guide your implementation.
