IN 2004 MY SON, PETER, was interviewing for the position of chief financial officer in a young start-up company. He did well in the interviews and was one of the two finalists. “The other guy is actually more qualified than I am,” Peter told me, “but I think I have an edge because he’s only worked in Fortune 100 companies.” Peter, on the other hand, had lots of experience with young companies; his last three positions had been at start-ups.
