PREFACE

Why another book on online teaching? Because too many earlier books overfocus on technologies, give prescriptive advice based on anecdotal experiences and common sense, and fail to address much in the way of learning theory, cognitive processes, course design, motivation, or pedagogy. We intend to fill these gaps by concentrating in this book on best teaching practices, anchoring our advice in research, and emphasizing cognitive science, learning theory, course design frameworks, and motivational techniques.
