3. OWL ontologies

The term “ontology” comes from philosophy and corresponds to the “science of being”. This term was then used in computer science to designate a formal definition of all the objects in a domain and the relationships existing between these objects. It is thus a “formal ontology”. An ontology therefore aims to structure and formalize objects in a domain, as independent as possible of the intended application: the ontology can thus be reused for other applications in the same domain.
