As described in the introduction, Ryan Hicke’s problem at SEI was not that he didn’t know about using freelancers. Most companies have some way to find and hire freelancers. In fact, with today’s rapid digital transformation, more and more businesses are coming to platforms to hire in bulk. The problem was that most companies that hired freelancers were doing it in secret. The use of outside talent is the secret sauce we alluded to in earlier chapters. Someone at a company we worked with used platforms like Freelancer.com or Upwork to advance their careers, and they saw no need to share this insight in the pre-pandemic world.
