Chapter 16

Digitalizing the Supply Chain

IN THIS CHAPTER

Bullet Understanding the digital world

Bullet Taking advantage of the benefits

Bullet Getting to a digital transformation

Technology is always evolving and providing new ways to accomplish our work. This is observed throughout the history of operations. The ability to produce standardized parts led to the assembly line and mass production, which eventually gave way to lean manufacturing (see Chapter 10). Applications of computing technology led to the implementation of systems such as material requirements planning (MRP) and enterprise resource planning (ERP). Visit Chapter 9 for more information on these systems.

The advancement of digital technologies is having a significant impact across all aspects of corporate strategy including operations. In this chapter, we explore this digital world and what it may mean for you. We start by explaining what digitalization really means and the benefits you can gain by implementation. We then embark on how to implement your digital transformation and end with a description of some of the solutions you may choose to use to assist you on the journey.
