The idea of using optical means to temporally multiplex data channels to generate higher baud rates than are otherwise available is a mature idea. In 1968, Bell Labs researchers Kinsel and Denton [1] described a free-space system, where the output from a He-Ne laser was modulated and multiplexed to reach a capacity of 448 Mbit/s.
