7.1. Introduction

Connection provisioning is the act of establishing a connection between two end points in an optical network. Provisioning has traditionally been in response to a service request received by the optical network operator from an external user. Recent developments in automating this process allow such requests to originate from user equipment directly. In either case, connection provisioning requires the identification of the two connection end points and the desired connection attributes.
