Introduction to SONET/SDH
The Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) forms the backbone of many service provider and carrier networks. The European, Asian, and Latin American implementation of SONET is known as Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH). SONET/SDH is used as a Layer 1.5 time-division multiplexed (TDM) transport mechanism for voice and data. Frame- and cell-switched data networks, such as Frame Relay and ATM/SMDS, also depend on SONET/SDH TDM circuits for transport or back-haul to their respective point of presence (POP) nodes.
