SDH Layers

SDH has four optical interface layers, which are depicted in Figure 6-2 and are as follows:

  • Path layer

  • Multiplex section layer

  • Regenerator section layer

  • Photonic layer

Path Layer

The path is a logical connection between the point at which the standard SDH frame format for the signal at a given rate is assembled and the point at which the standard SDH frame format for the signal is disassembled. The path overhead (POH) is first on, last off, so the alarm and error information contained within this layer represents end-to-end status. The POH is added or stripped at this layer.
