Shared Packet Ring
MSPPs support SPRs to provide Ethernet and packet transport over a SONET/SDH infrastructure. The implementation of this technology varies from vendor to vendor. The Cisco implementation of SPR calls for the provisioning of optical transport pipes at Layer 1.5 between Ethernet switch cards present in the various ONS nodes. At present Cisco supports 10-Mbps, 100-Mbps, and Gigabit Ethernet on the Ethernet modules. This technology allows the provisioning of bandwidth on the SONET/SDH ring for packet transport by statistically multiplexing Ethernet traffic onto a shared packet ring (circuit) that each MSPP node can access. This section discusses SPR implementation for the Cisco ONS nodes.
