Abstract:
The optical switch is one of the most important components of an optical network. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based optical switches have been a popular research topic and have shown a lot of promise. This chapter is a comprehensive review of MEMS-based optical switch architectures, actuating principles and fabrication process. The challenges that MEMS face as an enabling technology for optical switch implementation will also be discussed.
