Light Detection

An important part of an optical system is to convert light to a signal that then can be analyzed or stored. Examples of light detectors are

•  Cone and rod cells in the retina in the human eye

•  Optical recording materials, such as silver halide film used in analog photography

•  Photodiodes used as optical receivers in fiber-optic communication systems

•  A linear detector array used in a fax machine or a paper scanner

•  A two-dimensional detector array used in a digital camera

The basic principles of using a photon detector involve detection of light and converting the light intensity signal to current or voltage via an amplifier.
