Abstract
The power factor has been an increasingly important concern in all industries. Poor power factors can result in many problems and financial loss for industries. This work aims at improving the power factor by increasing the usage of real power in relation to reactive power. In the system, relay switching is used in conjunction with a capacitor to sense any drops in the power factor and switch the capacitor whenever requires. The addition of capacitor will help to improve power factor and also the demand of electricity on utility side will be reduced. With the help of a smart power factor correction unit, the power factor is corrected closer to unity. Depending on the load and power factor of the network, the power factor controller switches the necessary blocks of capacitors in steps to improve the power factor nearly 0.95. The system is simulated by using MATLAB software.
