Like traditional filesystems and volume managers, ASM stores metadata to describe and track diskgroup contents. All of the metadata that describe the composition and contents of an ASM diskgroup are stored within the diskgroup itself, which makes each diskgroup self-describing. ASM has two main classes of metadata: physical metadata and virtual metadata. Physical metadata are located at a fixed location on disk. Virtual metadata are stored in ASM files, and thus such metadata are spread evenly across the disks in the diskgroup like any other ASM file.
