Starting in Oracle Database 10g, there are two types of Oracle instances: relational database management system (RDBMS) and Automatic Storage Management (ASM) instances. ASM instances mount and manage diskgroups. RDBMS instances mount and manage databases. This section focuses on the ASM instance. The ASM instance is much simpler to manage than an RDBMS instance, because very few parameters are needed to run it. The ASM instance executes only a small portion of the code in the Oracle kernel, thus it is less likely to encounter failures or contention.
