History of ASM

The idea for Automatic Storage Management (ASM) first occurred to me in early 1996. A computer manufacturer that I was visiting gave me a presentation on a filesystem for video serving. The manufacturer's plan was to put one or two full-length movies on a single physical disk. The company would make a new copy of the movie for every 10 viewers. The next day I was thinking about this and realized that the plan could not work. I came to the conclusion that the only workable solution was to stripe the movies across a large number of disks with a very large stripe. I was not the first person to figure this out.
