Chapter 3. Introduction to Oracle Data Warehousing
The solutions outlined in Chapter 2 provide business intelligence gleaned from transactional data. Such solutions can provide reporting and simple drill-downs to more detailed data and, in some cases, rely on data warehousing features present in the Oracle database. In this chapter, we'll introduce Oracle database features and describe how they might be used if you deploy a classic data warehouse solution. We'll also describe some of the data warehouses available today for some of Oracle's applications that will be merged in Oracle's next generation Project Fusion business intelligence applications.
In subsequent chapters, we'll explore how to leverage these features and deploy a data warehouse solution in more detail. Chapter 4 describes some of the hardware platform configuration choices. Chapter 5 describes database schema design choices and types of analyses these choices enable. We describe Oracle's business intelligence tools and how they are used in Chapter 6. In Chapter 7, we'll describe loading options that might be used in populating a data warehouse. In Chapter 8, we describe manageability of an Oracle data warehouse in much greater detail.
