SQL Command-Line Interface
The SQL*Plus command-line interface requires that you have an account on the server or that you install Oracle client software on your local machine. The command-line tool requires a thick-client connection to build a socket between a client and server. The interactive SQL*Plus interface is provided by the Oracle client software.
You can access the SQL*Plus application directly when you are working on the same machine as the Oracle database.
