Oracle RAC is a highly scalable solution that allows users to add/remove nodes on demand in the existing cluster without affecting the availability of the active database services. Whereas Oracle RAC 10g extended the capacity to add and remove the nodes online, Oracle RAC 11g Release 2 has introduced new features such as RACONE node, which can be transparently converted to an Oracle RAC database. Nodes should be homogeneous and should have the same computing capacity. Though adding a node with higher or lower capacity than the members is technically possible, it is usually not recommended because it creates a logical imbalance between the nodes.
