Instance Recovery

The procedure used to recover from single-instance crash failures as well as failures of Oracle RAC instances is called instance recovery. In the case of Oracle RAC, a surviving instance recovers all the failed instances. Instance recovery aims to restore the data block changes that were in the cache of the failed instance and to close the thread that was left open. Instance recovery uses only online redo log files and current online datafiles (not restored backups).
