Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) is a transparent way to encrypt data in a database. The encryption is transparent because it occurs below the Structured Query Language (SQL) layer. The database engine automatically encrypts and decrypts data as it reads and writes it from the file system. In this chapter, we’ll explore how to use TDE and discuss some of the advantages of using it. First, we’ll put TDE in perspective with the various other Oracle encryption mechanisms.
