Chapter 10. The Oracle Instance

The terms Oracle instance and Oracle database are often used interchangeably; however, there is a definite distinction between them. The term instance refers to the memory structures and background processes that allow access to the physical files that make up the database . This chapter presents the elements of the instance, and Chapter 11, will provide information on database structures.
