10. Migrating to Exadata
While the Exadata Database Machine does run what looks like a standard Oracle 11gR2 or 12c database, it is more than just a database. The Exadata Database Machine includes proprietary storage, high-performance computing networks, and Oracle Database features proprietary to the hardware. Add to that the fact that Exadata supports only OEL and Solaris, and migrating to Exadata means potentially a cross-platform migration as well as a database upgrade.
That is a lot of moving parts in one single migration, which in turn leads to a lot of possibilities for things not to go as expected. As a result, migrations onto Exadata have a fair share of surprises waiting to surface and catch us off guard.
