For the purpose of this chapter, we will define performance optimization as the application of configuration changes designed to ensure that the overall latency and/or throughput of an enterprise application’s interfaces are improved. We will also be using the short term optimization instead of the full term performance optimization interchangeably in this context throughout. Additionally, we will be approaching optimization from a middleware point of view alone.
