Gauging How Linux May Change the DBMS Market

Linux is only the kernel of an operating system, the part that controls hardware, manages files, and separates processes. Third-party companies can add multiple install methods, applications, and other add-ons to the Linux systems they ship, which are called Linux distributions. These companies can combine utilities and applications to differentiate their offerings. However, between these products, the actual Linux kernel has remained almost completely the same.
