It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

SOA produces Business Agility through Decoupling, which is not at all a bad thing. Business agility consists of various qualities: The ability to quickly create new functionality by reusing existing, established components. The ability to quickly change functionality by modifying components without impact and ripple through effects. The ability to roll out interconnected networks of components that interact yet are not tightly coupled.
To realize that potential, any implementation of SOA does not only require development tools and a run-time engine such as provided by Oracle SOA Suite—although that is a sine qua non condition. ...
