Name

orapwd

Use orapwd to create a password file. You need a password file if you want to connect to the database as SYSDBA or SYSOPER from a remote machine.

Syntax

orapwd file=file_name password=sys_password [entries=n] [force={y|n}]

Parameters

file=file_name

Specifies the name of the password file (optionally with the directory name) to be created.

password=sys_password

Specifies a password for the SYS user. You don’t need to specify the SYS username; the user SYS is implicit.

entries=n

Specifies the number of entries in the password file, which in turn corresponds to the number of distinct users allowed to connect to the database as SYSDBA or SYSOPER.

force={y|n}

Specifies whether to overwrite an existing password file. The default is not to overwrite an existing file.

Examples

The following example illustrates how to create a password file using the orapwd utility:

orapwd file=C:\oracle\admin\sandbox_orapwd.ora
password=secret

The REMOTE LOGIN PASSWORDFILE parameter

The usage of the orapwd utility is almost always associated with the init.ora parameter REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE. This parameter takes the following form:

remote_login_passwordfile={NONE | EXCLUSIVE | SHARED}

The allowed values are:

NONE

Specifies that no remote privileged connections are allowed.

EXCLUSIVE

Specifies that the password file can be used with only one database.

SHARED

Specifies that the password file can be shared by multiple databases on the same server. A shared password file can hold the password for only the SYS user. ...
