I've used this system myself for many years now, and most of my clients use it as well. It's one of my favorite organizing WOWs!
After years of maintaining three bulging, awkward files of warranties, instruction books, and receipts for all my belongings and still having trouble finding documentation when I needed it, I had an idea: Why not group all the information for an item together? It makes much more sense for the instruction manual, manufacturer's warranty, extended warranty, and receipt for the refrigerator to be kept all together, I reasoned. So I went through all of that paperwork and matched everything up by item.
