Performing a Clean Install of the Base OS with a Recovery Disk
The easiest way to do a clean install of the Base Mountain Lion OS is to create a recovery disk on a USB flash drive. (Any USB drive will work, as long at it is 1GB or larger.) You then boot from the recovery disk to erase the destination drive and install Mountain Lion on it. The recovery disk doesn’t include the entire operating system but has just enough to boot the Mac and download the rest.
Creating a recovery disk
You create a bootable recovery disk, using Apple’s Recovery Disk Assistant (a free download at http://support.apple.com). Here’s how:
1. Plug a 1GB or larger USB flash drive into your server Mac’s USB port.
2. Download and launch Recovery Disk Assistant.
3. Agree to the license agreement.
4. Select a USB drive and click Continue, as shown in Figure 4-3.
5. Type your password when prompted and then click OK.
Recovery Disk Assistant creates the recovery boot disk on your flash drive.
