EPILOGUE TO THE NEW EDITION
There is still a long journey to transforming the face of senior leadership in corporate America, and there is still much to do to end racial and gender inequality at the top. The barriers we identified in these pages more than twenty years ago still persist, and the advice we provided remains relevant. While there has been a new wave of women in CEO positions in recent years (according to an NBC article, “a record number of women took over as CEO in 2020”1), only two Black women were selected to become CEOs of Fortune 500 companies in 2021 (Rosalind Brewer, the former COO of Starbucks was appointed CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. in March and Thasunda Brown Duckett took the helm of TIAA in May).
