On one of my first trips down the Grand Canyon, one guide took me into an old abandoned mine. He took me far back into the tunnel, turned off the flashlight, and then ran off through the dark. I had never been in total darkness before. It was so black that I couldn’t even see my hand in front of my face. I slowly turned around and started feeling my way along the tunnel walls while tripping over the rubble on the cave floor. As I tried to find my way out, I kept searching the blackness for a pinpoint of light that would lead me to the cave’s entrance and the safety of the sunlight.
