Chapter 4: Design of nonconventional time curves for overcurrent relays

Abstract

The design and application of nonconventional time curves (NCCs) are presented in this chapter. Since the use of the same time curves for directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) does not avoid the problem of crossing curves in highly interconnected systems, violations of coordination constraints may occur. NCCs offer an alternative solution since the time curve is designed to solve each specific problem, meaning that the coordination of overcurrent relays (OCRs) is improved. The main objective is to increase the setting parameters or the degrees of freedom of the time curves, as this increase of flexibility can enhance the performance of DOCRs.
