In the previous three chapters, you learned all about the Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) and its PacketCable variants, Network-based Call Signaling (NCS) and Trunk Gateway Control Protocol (TGCP). These protocols enable a PacketCable call agent to interface with its local subscribers and subscribers off the legacy public switched telephone network (PSTN). In this chapter, you will gain an understanding of the Call Management Server Signaling (CMSS) protocol used to communicate with remote voice over IP (VoIP) endpoints.
