Integration of HIS, RIS, PACS, and ePR
PACS is an imaging management system that requires pertinent data from other medical information systems for effective operation. Among these systems, data from the hospital information system (HIS) and the radiology information system (RIS) are the most important. Many functions in the PACS server and archive server described in Chapter 11 (image routing, prefetching, automatic grouping, etc.) rely on data extracted from both HIS and RIS. This chapter presents some HIS and RIS data that are important to the PACS operation and discusses how to interface HIS and RIS with PACS to obtain these data. Another topic of importance related to PACS image distribution is the electronic patient record (ePR), or electronic medical record (eMR), which is discussed in Section 13.5. Figure 13.1 (excerpted from Fig. 1.3) shows how this chapter corresponds to the contents of Part II. Figure 13.2 shows the position of these components (in orange red) in the PACS data flow.
13.1 HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
The hospital information system (HIS) is a computerized management system for handling three categories of tasks in a healthcare environment:
1. Support clinical and medical patient care activities in the hospital.
2. Administer the hospital’s daily business transactions (financial, personnel, payroll, bed census, etc.).
3. Evaluate hospital performances and costs, and project the long-term forecast.
