CHAPTER 22
MULTIMEDIA ELECTRONIC PATIENT RECORD (ePR) SYSTEM
The concept of an electronic patient record (ePR) was introduced in Chapter 13 when the integration of HIS/RIS/PACS was presented. The traditional ePR contains mainly textual information. This chapter discusses the multimedia ePR system that includes with the textual data also images, videos, waveforms, and other data from acquisition devices within and outside of the radiology profession. First we review the traditional ePR system; then we present the ePR with images and follow this by a discussion of the multimedia ePR system. Two case studies of ePR with images in the US Veterans Affairs Healthcare Enterprise (VAHE) and the Hospital Authority (HA) of Hong Kong are used as examples. The concept of multimedia ePR is presented with examples in radiation therapy treatment and minimally invasive spinal surgery. These two topics will be detailed in Chapters 23 and 24, respectively.
Figure 22.1 illustrates the topics and concepts to be covered and their interrelationship with the five logical layers of the medical imaging informatics infrastructure (see Fig. 20.2).
22.1 THE ELECTRONIC PATIENT RECORD (ePR) SYSTEM
22.1.1 Purpose of the ePR System
The electronic patient record (ePR) system is an emerging concept that offers a way to supplement or extract relevant data of the patient from small-, medium-, or large-scale clinical-based hospital information system (HIS) or clinic management system (CMS). The basic concept of ePR ...
