CHAPTER 27

Location Tracking and Verification System in Clinical Environment

Imaging informatics related to the topics we discuss in Part IV—Data Grid with computational services, multimedia ePR and its applications in radiation therapy and minimally invasive spinal surgery, image-based CAD and CAD–PACS integration all derived from medical images and HIS/RIS/PACS data and their supported resources—will continue to grow with advances in research and development in basic and applied clinical research. In this chapter, we take a different direction and present imaging informatics R&D in the sense that we take advantage of the already or being developed technologies from other fields and modify them for well-defined and needed clinical applications. Figure 20.9 is reproduced here as Figure 27.1 showing how this chapter corresponds to other chapters in the domain of image informatics R&D. In this chapter, we describe a location tracking and verification system (LTVS) that integrates biometric technologies with HIS/RIS/PACS data in the MIII core infrastructure (see Fig. 27.1) to automatically monitor and identify staff and patients in a healthcare image-based environment as a way to partially conform to HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) requirement. Biometric technologies used in LTVS include facial features recognition and fingerprint recognition. The HIS/RIS/PACS data utilized are not patient history, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes as described in previous ...
