Introduction
This chapter describes my approach to combining multiple images into what I call a “collage portrait.” There are many terms for combining multiple images in an artwork, such as “collage,” “montage,” “combines” and “assemblages.” What you, or others, label your artwork, style or technique is less important than what you say with it and the impact it has. My concept of a collage portrait is an artwork that reads as a portrait and combines many visual elements that relate to the portrait subject. Thus a collage portrait is not a pure collage or a pure portrait painting but a combination of both.
