My parents introduced me to the wonders of the public library at a young age. It held an immense number of books on every subject you could imagine.
But wait: with so many books on so many subjects by so many authors, how can you possibly find what you want or even know what’s available? The answer is an index. In those days, libraries typically had three different indexes found in the card catalog (hundreds of drawers full of index cards). These cards allowed you to find books (a) by author, (b) by title, or (c) by subject.
