Log:   Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, January 31, 2005, 6:50 A.M. (Elevation 18,500 feet, temperature 22 degrees Fahrenheit, windy.)

The occasional crunch of my feet on the loose scree slope is all I hear. Then the inevitable slipping of my foot in the scree. Otherwise, quiet … and my thoughts:

Approaching the “false” summit now. Sun is dawning in the distance … eerie red glow flowing over everything. What’s that saying …“Red sky at morning, sailors take warning”? But we’re not sailing, just climbing Africa’s highest mountain.
