Log:   Day three, Kilimanjaro climb, January 29, 2005, 3:20 P.M.

Three days of slogging through the rain forest and through the dry lands surrounding the mountain … According to the altimeter and occasional signs, we are at the 11,000-foot mark on this 19,400-foot mountain. We’ve been in Africa for six days and have yet to see the top of the mountain.

Finally, as we come over a rise the clouds lift and the snowcapped summit of Kilimanjaro is in full sight. It’s a long, crooked top with snow on the higher end of the crater and no snow ...
