When you enter the mountains with the intention of climbing the summit, you enter an extremely dangerous zone. I’ve seen the temperatures drop by 50 degrees in 10 minutes. I’ve watched the heat of day open up crevasses and change the glaciers under them. I’ve even fallen into a crevasse myself. Dangers lurk very nearby. In such an environment, one of the most critical necessities for keeping safe and achieving success is a Sherpa—an experienced guide.
