Particle–Particle Interaction
Abstract
The mechanical behavior of bulk solids is determined by interactions between particles at the microscopic level. In this chapter, typical particle–particle interactions are discussed. Both static (i.e., contact) and dynamic (i.e., impact) interactions of elastic and elastic-plastic particles with or without adhesion and the presence of liquid bridge are considered. For normal contact/impact of elastic particles, Hertz theory is introduced, and force–displacement relationships and duration of impact are analyzed.
