More than likely, you have at least one social media account. Perhaps you're interacting with social media right now. (Tell your daughter that the baby pictures are wonderful and you can't wait to see her family at Thanksgiving.) But these accounts provide a lot of information to the outside world, and that information can be used to hack your passwords and personal accounts. This chapter shows you how to avoid those problems, allowing you to focus on the baby pictures and holiday plans with a clear head.
Networking Online
Nowadays people often meet and talk with their friends and share experiences on online networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter. You need to be careful about how much personal information you post online. The more you post, the easier you make it for the thief posing as a friend to get your information and steal your identity.
Knowing what information to keep private
The best advice I can give you is to keep your personal information offline. Of course, you wouldn't put your Social Security Number (SSN) online, but what about
- Your date of birth?
- The city where you live?
- Your cellphone number?
- Your name? A pseudonym?
