8.4. Deformable Template Models

In the previous section, we considered the problem of searching for a known reference pattern (template) within a test image. We assumed that the template and the object, residing in the image, were identical. The only differences that were allowed to enter into our discussion were those imposed by a different orientation and/or scaling. However, there are many problems where we know a priori that the available template and the object we search for in the image may not look exactly the same.
