At the beginning of this chapter we will first review what has been done so far. The principal goal is to assign a class to an unknown object given its features and a training set of objects with known features and classes. From a more abstract point of view, one wants to learn some kind of rule, given a finite training sample of special cases. The rule will then be applied to a new situation, where one hopes that the proposed rule has general significance.
