11.1 Timing

This covers the period between the compilation of an item – often in a studio – and the final mastering of the finished item. In some cases it is difficult to distinguish this phase separately, but it is rare for it not to exist at all.

With a ‘live’ transmission, it is unusual for adjustments not to have to be made after a rehearsal. Only in live news and current affairs programmes do adjustments have to be made on-air. An overall studio producer/director will ask colleagues to cut arbitrary amounts of time out of items. Hellish though this can be, it usually works.
